Why does Schlafly taste so much better than the mass-produced beers?
Because we choose to make beer styles that offer more malt and hop flavor and character than most macro breweries. We aren't required to sell an enormous volume of a beer in order to make a profit. Therefore, our beers are more flavorful because we aren't trying to appeal to a mass market.

Which Schlafly Beer is the closest to a mass-produced light beer?
We have two! Schlafly Hefeweizen is an unfiltered American Wheat Ale, lighter in color, body and bitterness but still rich in flavor; Schlafly Pilsner is a golden-colored lager, crisp, complex and well rounded. We do not brew a light beer, but both of these are full of character and answer the needs of most lite-beer drinkers.

Which Schlafly Beers are vegan?
None of our production beers in bottles use any animal products. None of our draft beer available anywhere uses animal products. Ergo, no Schlafly beer uses any animal products in the brewing production.
That being said, many years ago we used isinglass to clarify our cask-conditioned ales, but have changed practices and no longer use it. If you find yourself at The Schlafly Tap Room, the only place that serves Schlafly cask-conditioned real ale, you can ask if the casks were produced using isinglass. We'll let the bartenders know if this changes.
We do not use honey in any of our beers, unless it's called Honey Wheat or something like that.

Do you produce a gluten-free beer?
We did indeed brew a gluten free beer in 2006-07. The extract came from sorghum and corn syrup. Unfortunately, the demand was extremely limited so it was not feasible for us to continue to produce the beer regularly at the brewery.

Why can't I get Schlafly Beer in my area?
Schlafly Beer is dedicated to serving the freshest beer available to a local market. To that end, we have a very strict quality standard and we limit our distribution to approximately 3 to 4 driving hours from our breweries our definition of "local." If you are within that distance, it may be that we haven't found a distributor that is able to store our beer cold or live up to our high standards. We won't sacrifice quality for volume sales.

What is cask-conditioned beer?
Cask conditioning is a process by which the beer is aged in a cask, or keg, where it matures and carbonates naturally. The beer is then pumped by air to the bar, where it is served at "cellar temperature," about 54 degrees F.

Why does draft beer give me a worse hangover than bottled beer?
We don't advise drinking any beer to the point that it produces hangovers. However, the following link offers some great information, but doesn't offer an answer to support the "draft worse than bottle" theory. Click here.

What does BBL mean?
BBL is the abbreviation for barrel. A US beer barrel is 31 gallons. Different liquids have barrels of different volumes. Just as "barrels of oil" refers to units of 42 gallons, not to the actual containers, "barrels of beer" refers to units of 31 gallons, not the containers holding the beer.

Why don't you brew a non-alcoholic beer? Will you ever?
We don't brew a non-alcoholic beer because none of us want to drink one! Seriously though, we will never brew a non-alcoholic beer because of the processes available to produce it the only one that makes a non-alcoholic beer that's worth drinking is prohibitively expensive, which explains why there are so few good non-alcoholic beers available on the market.

Are you guys related to Phyllis Schlafly?
Phyllis Schlafly is Tom Schlafly's aunt. She is the widow of Fred Schlafly, Tom's father's brother. She is not involved in the business.

Does Tom Schlafly work there?
Tom is a lawyer who tells the people in his law office that he practices law full time; and he tells people in the brewery that he works on the brewery full time. No one in either place is really sure what he does.

Why don't you guys have Schlafly girls?
We do, they're just too classy to dress like tramps and flaunt themselves as sex symbols (anyhow, our beer is so good, we don't need gimmicks to promote it).
