TOP FERMENTATION: Tom Schlafly's monthly column

Given the high level of literary acumen among the alert readers (ARs) and erudite readers (ERs) of The Growler, it’s appropriate to begin this month’s column with the tale of a hypothetical bibliophile (HB).

Not too long ago this HB telephoned a bookstore and asked whether it carried the complete works of Shakespeare.  The clerk who answered the phone told the HB that she didn’t know but would find out.  A few minutes later she returned to the phone and said, “Yes, we do in fact have the book you want.”  Upon hearing this, the HB drove to the store to purchase the volume, only to be told by a salesman that nothing by William Shakespeare was on the shelves or in stock.  The same salesman then told the HB that he should have known better than to believe what another employee of the bookstore had told him.

This, in essence, was my experience with a restaurant in St. Louis.  I called ahead to find out if it served Schlafly Beer.  The hostess who answered the phone told me she would check with a bartender.  A few minutes later she confirmed that the bar did carry Schlafly. Relying on this information, I drove to have dinner at the restaurant, where I was told by a bartender that his bar did not carry Schlafly and I should have known better than to believe what a hostess told me over the phone.
